Harmonization of IEC 60079-11 (Ed. 7) under ATEX expected by December 2025

SGS reports that IEC 60079-11:2024 (Intrinsic Safety "Ex i") was adopted as EN in December 2024, but is not yet listed in the ATEX Annex I. Harmonization is expected by December 2025. Until then, the old EN 60079-11:2012 remains valid. After that, non-compliant devices will lose their ATEX conformity.

✨ Highlights

  • Standard status: EN 60079-11:2024 published from December 2024, but not yet ATEX harmonized
  • Transition period: Old version is valid until at least December 2027
  • Harmonization expected: By the end of 2025, seamless normative work will be possible

⚡ Practical tip

Make sure that current products with "Ex i" reference the new standard 2024 – even if they are still based on the old version. Prepare in advance to avoid certification gaps after the expiration in 2027.

⚠️ Attention with

  • Electrical components that were certified after 2012 but remain without transition to 2024 will lose their ATEX presumption effect upon the expiration of the transition period.
  • Check technical documentation: Certificates and manuals must indicate the current version of the standard.
