New ATEX standard for mine gas equipment: Decision (EU) 2025/597

With the decision (EU) 2025/597, the EU Commission recognized the new EN 14983:2024 as a harmonized standard under the ATEX Directive in April 2025. It replaces the previous version from 2007 and pertains to devices for the extraction of mine gas in underground mines.

What exactly is changing?

  • The new standard EN 14983:2024 is officially valid.
  • The old standard EN 14983:2007 will be withdrawn on October 1, 2026.
  • For operators, this means that the new standard must be taken into account in future when procuring new equipment or replacing existing equipment.

Conclusion:

For most users in the ATEX area, this is only relevant if mine gas systems are used. Anyone working in this environment should check in good time whether planned investments or existing equipment are affected.
