🔄 New standard IEC 60079-18:2025 - What operators should now know about potting protection "m"

In July 2025, the revised IEC 60079-18:2025 was published – the central standard for Ex devices with encapsulation protection type "m". It replaces the previous version from 2014/2017 and introduces stricter technical requirements for manufacturers and new products.

What does the new IEC 60079-18 regulate?

The standard describes the ignition protection type "m" (Encapsulation), in which electrical components are completely encapsulated to isolate them from explosive atmospheres.

The new edition 2025 specifies:

  • Stress limits:
    • ma: up to 1 kV
    • mb / mc: up to 11 kV
  • New requirements for:
    • Materials and Their Temperature Behavior
    • Age resistance and tightness
    • Testing methods according to the state of the art
  • Priority over IEC 60079-0 in case of technical overlaps

What does this mean for operators?

For existing devices with valid approval, nothing changes. They may continue to be operated and sold as long as they are certified and meet the operating conditions.

It is important to make the distinction:

  • 🟢 Existing devices with certification retain their validity
  • 🔵 New devices must now be developed and tested according to the updated standard

Why is this still relevant for buyers?

Manufacturers will need to use more complex testing procedures and modern materials for new or revised devices in the future. This could lead to changes in product designs, delivery times, or prices in the medium term.

Therefore, our advice:

✅ Always pay attention to a current IEC 60079-18:2025 certification when purchasing

✅ Regularly check technical data sheets and certificates

✅ For sensitive applications, consciously use only new or updated versions
